Writing has and will always be my first love in life.
For as long as I can remember, I've been writing stories. I used to sit in my little twin bed, writing tales of adventure in binders on lined paper in blue and black ink. They never amounted to much. And no one ever read them. But it was in that little girl's twin bed that my biggest dream in life was born: to be a published author.
In Grade 10, I told my art teacher I wanted to be a writer. And from there on, I worked hard to perfect my craft.
I earned my Bachelor of Arts Honours in History and English Literature from Algoma University, and then my Master of Arts in History from Western U. I was awarded a prestigious SSHRC Scholarship for my thesis work.
After school, I became the first-ever writer for Algoma University. I used my spare time to freelance, writing for other platforms, including the now shuttered Northern Hoot, to make a name for myself as an investigative journalist in the north.
While I loved the work, I was stuck writing in the formulaic templates of press releases and media releases, or telling stories that didn't speak to me. It wasn't as creative as I wanted it to be.
I fell in love with photography and opened Meaghan Kent Photography, INC. in 2016. Today, I am a full-time award-winning lifestyle and wedding photographer, and the premiere photographer of the Algoma district. Photography has allowed me to express that creative side of me that had been yearning to explode for over a decade.
In 2023, my husband and I relocated our family to the shores of St. Joseph Island. We now live in a quaint cedar-plank cabin on the St. Marys River. Being born and raised in northern Ontario, I find never-ending inspiration in the natural landscapes that surround me: be it the maple forests, the Great Lakes, or the Aurora Borealis. We never bore of our exploring our beautiful territory.
Well, this past year, I found myself longing for my pen again. Recalling fond memories of my binder and those lined-papered stories of my childhood. It was finally time to realize that lifelong dream of mine: become a published author.
I always wanted to write fiction, specifically romance. And I always wanted to incorporate my love for the north as well as history into the work in some way. Literary history is what I studied in school, so is it surprising that my debut novel blends the literary genres as well? Women's fiction with romance, with a teensy-tiny bit of history. Plus, the novel takes place on Manitoulin Island, which in my opinion, is the perfect escape in both fiction and reality.
I hope you join me as I chase my childhood dream of becoming an author.
